MLS Power Rankings

 Hello readers, it's been a bit since I've had time to sit down and write my blog hence the reason it's so late this week. We had a good slate of games midweek and LAFC managing to miraculously keep their CCL Finals against Leon at 1-2 on the road. No time for horseplay, so let's jump into this week's power rankings:

1. FC Cincinnati 11-3-1 Last Week: 1; All FCC does these days is win. They're eight points clear in the Supporter's Shield race. They're currently on a five match winning streak and are still alive in the US Open Cup, where they will meet Pittsburgh in the quarter finals. 

2. LAFC 7-4-1 Last Week: 2; LAFC have three games in hand in the Supporter's Shield race so you can't count them out yet. The last fifteen minutes of the CCL game was huge for them. Leon scored an incredible header that would've made it 3-0 but the goal was called off for a foul. Then Buoanga scored a racing goal to make it 1-2 to give them a HUGE leg up heading into the second leg.

3. St. Louis CITY SC 8-1-4 Last Week: 3; The Ravioli Boyz had the midweek off and are coming off two big wins. They have three games in hand on Seattle and only sit one point behind them for the Western Conference lead. Which could be massive with how their home field advantage has been this season.

4. Nashville SC 8-4-3 Last Week: 4; No changes to the top four this week. If Nashville were to go out and get a striker, even Kei Kamara from Chicago for example they would be an even greater threat to win MLS Cup this season. 

5. Philadelphia Union 8-3-4 Last Week: 5; The Union have won six of their last eight and secured points in their last eight matches. Jim Curtin has the guys rolling and Brendan Craig, Jack McGlynn and Quin Sullivan are still of at the U20 World Cup. If Cincinnati or LAFC falter, look out for the Union flying up the stands.

6-8 FC Dallas, San Jose Quakes, New England Revs; None of these teams are in great form right now, but I believe they are the 6th, 7th, and 8th best teams in the league as of today. 

Bottom 5

25. NYCFC 

26. Inter Miami

27. Real Salt Lake

28. Colorado Rapids

29. LA Galaxy

The gap between 6 and 26 in this league is extremely small right now. FC Dallas sit on 23 points and Inter Miami sit on 16 points. Sporting Kansas City have finally promoted out of the bottom five after their most recent run of play. After destroying Portland at home then beating Dallas on the road they now shockingly only sit two points out of ninth in the Western Conference. Health will be SKC's strongest opponent the rest of the way. If Kinda, Pulido, Salloi, and Russell can stay healthy they can continue to climb the standings. One thing they will have to address in the summer transfer window is center back. They still don't have depth and Fontas still looks vulnerable. If they can make some magic happen in the summer transfer window and everyone stays healthy then I'd expect Sporting Kansas City to be firmly in the playoffs and possibly even make a run in League's Cup.

MLS Playoff Reviews to Date

 As usual life and obligations have slowed down my blogging. This time of the year there is a lot going on around my house, but I sneak in soccer when I can and blogs when I can. This year is the first year of expanded playoffs. I think playoffs are fun, they bring in crowds and revenue that the league needs.  My gripe against the expanded playoffs is simple: its waters down an already watered down regular season. To make the playoffs all you have to do is not be historically bad for a two month stretch. Hell SKC was historically bad for the first 11 games of the season and still hosted a playoff game and made it to the conference semi-finals. I'm just saying when there's 5,000 people at a San Jose-Chicago game on a beautiful May Saturday night, that's why. The games don't matter.  Also I'm a big fan of give me all of the soccer you can. MLS Cup

 Today marks the end of a season that started in February of this year with LAFC taking on the Columbus Crew. The original '96 Crew against the new giants of Los Angeles, the reigning MLS Cup Champions.  As much as I love a good romantic preview, there are no legacies on the line here. Carlos Vela has proven to be one of the most impactful signings in MLS history. The former MVP and MLS Cup Champ can just add to his legendary MLS status today. They are looking to be the first back-to-back MLS Cup Champions since the LA Galaxy of 2011-12.  On the other side Wilfred Nancy has proven himself to be a very good MLS coach, Darlington Nagbe has won it all twice with Portland and Atlanta United. Aidan Morris could use a moment in the spotlight as he tries to make a move to Europe to get back in the National Team conversation.  I am excited for this final, but I do think most of the major storylines of the year have been eliminated: FC Cincinnati the Supporters Shield winners...

MLS Wild Card Previews!

 Thirty four weeks of the regular season have been played and the playoff matchups are set, well with the exception of who will be playing the top seeds in either conference. For that we have two play in games this week! Let's dive in: Eastern Conference (9) Charlotte FC at (8) New York Red Bulls It's slightly amazing that both of these teams have made the playoffs. Both teams intermittently struggled throughout the regular season and the Red Bulls playoff streak was in serious danger up until decision day. The Red Bulls will have the home crowd at their back and a group of hungry dedicated players led by young USMNT prospect John Tolkin. The young left back scored the penalty to put the Red Bulls into the playoffs. For Charlotte they will rely on their strong forwards led by Polish international Karol Swiderski and Argentinian Enzo Copetti.  Prediction: NYRB 2-1 Charlotte Western Conference (9) San Jose Quakes at (8) Sporting Kansas City.
